Creating a Sense of Suspense
After listening to Alfred Hitchcock, I'm sure you are ready to try some suspenseful camera work out on your own. Here's the guidelines:
- First, read this article about how Hitchcock used suspense.
- Work with up to three other people and sit and talk to each other about how you could create a sense of suspense visually, using only the camera and no dialogue.
- Think it through completely before starting to shoot. You haven't learned to edit yet, so you will have to meticulously plan your shots to get them in the right order.
- It doesn't have to be a full fledged story...just try to capture a sense of anticipation and suspense visually. It does need to make sense, however.
- Apply the steady camera shots you've been learning.
