The Famous Filmmaker Report

Pick a filmmaker that you would like to learn more about. The filmmaker you chose can be major talent who has made well known blockbuster movies, or he or she can be an independent filmmaker who is less well known. The filmmaker can be known for feature films or documentaries.

Here is what you will need to do:

1. Start by choosing and researching your filmmaker. A good place to start is IMDB (The Internet Movie Database), but there are many other websites and books from which you can choose to begin your search.

2. Tell us about your filmmaker's life. When and where were they born? How many films has he or she made? Tell us the basic facts about this person. Show us still shots of the filmmaker and stills from some of his or her movies. Lay out a basic filmography (a list of all his or her films in order).

3. Pick at least 3, but no more that five minutes worth of clips of the filmmaker's original work to show to the class. You may bring in DVDs or bring in clips from home that you have downloaded from the web. See me if you are not sure how to do that. The clips you show must be class appropriate and not contain excess violence, profanity, or nudity.

4. After showing your clips, discuss the basic style and the different filmmaking techniques that your filmmaker has employed in the clips. Analyze what we have just seen. Talk about the types of stories he or she tells, the camera work he or she uses, lighting, editing, his or her general filmmaking style.

5. Finalize your presentation by discussing what you have learned by studying this filmmaker. How has he or she influenced you?

6. Decide which medium you would like to use to create your presentation: You could use Keynote, your blog, Flash or all of the above. This is a solo project.

Presentations will be made during classroom by alphabetical order starting on April 17th.
