Notebook Film Sound Assignment
This assignment covers chapter 4 in your textbook. As you read the chapter, answer the following questions in the right side of your notebook:
- Explain the difference between dialogue, music, and sound effects in film.
- What is meant by "overlapping" dialogue?
- What is a sound dissolve?
- Explain the purpose of dialogue. What does it do for the movie?
- What is the job of a Foley artist?
- Explain the importance of ambient sound.
- What is asynchronous sound? Provide an example from a film you have seen.
- Study the example on pages 160-161 of your book entitled, Vocals, Sound Effects, and Music in an Excerpt from Psycho.
Your assignment is to find a one to two minute section from a movie and perform a sound analysis on the section. Play the section several times to yourself and then analyze it in regard to the following categories:
visuals, vocals, sound effects, and music. Download the following Word document as an example:

- Include at least a 100 word analysis of your observations with your list of specific observations recorded on the chart.
- Check out the website Filmsound.org and pick one area mentioned in the website that you find interesting. Write a summary (at least 150 words) of the section of the website that you have read and investigated.
