Analyzing a Sequence of Film (Notebook Assignment)

For this assignment, I would like you to choose a sequence of shots that create a dramatic unit (at least three minutes in length). This sequence may be from any film you admire for its shot selection/editing qualities. Watch the sequence several times, and describe each of the shots and scenes in as much detail as you can.

Steps to Complete Assignment
  1. Choose a film that we have not seen in class.Provide the title of the film, and give a short overview of the sequence.

  2. Watch the sequence several times.

  3. Number each shot and each scene. Describe the action, record the dialogue and other sounds, and note camera angles, camera movements, and any other relevant details (lighting, special effects, etc).

  4. Finally, write a paragraph in which you describe why you think the editor chose those particular pieces of film.
